5 Tips on What to Wear for Your Business Headshots

Your headshot is the first impression you make on your LinkedIn and social media profile.  Preparing your clothing is important so you can look your best for your headshots. You will feel confident and that will show in your photos. Here are 5 tips to choose the right clothes and be prepared so you get the best results.

1. Try it On
Plan on what you will be wearing several days in advance of your shoot and make sure everything fits properly.  Clothing that is too tight or oversized won't be flattering.  This will give you time to buy something new if what you were planning on wearing won't work. A layered look always look good so consider a suit jacket or cardigan sweater and try different color combinations together. It's a good idea to take selfies of the outfits you are considering against a neutral background and see what looks best.

2. Color
Solid colors are the best choice for headshots but very small prints work well, too.  Be careful about very thin lines since they can cause a moire effect.   Choose a color that looks good  on you or that brings out the color of your eyes. If  you get a lot of compliments every time you wear a blue shirt it must look good on you so go with blue.   If your photos are going to be taken on a white background avoid white, beige or light yellow.  Bright reds, oranges or kelly greens can be a bit bright for a corporate business headshot.  My favorite colors for headshots are all shades of blue, burgundy, purple, grey,  rose pink and tan (on a grey background).  It's always nice to have a pop of color, too.  For example if  you are wearing a dark suit jacket you can pair it with a  bright blouse or tie.

3. Neckline and Collars
A V neck or scoop neckline is often very flattering since it elongates your neck. Suit jackets create this V and look great in professional headshots.  A simple necklace will give you a more polished look.   If you wear a button down shirt with a collar make sure the collars aren't too limp or droopy.  A button down collar, collar stays or a freshly starched collar can keep help keep it's shape. If you can't decide on whether or not to wear a tie , start with a tie on  then take it off halfway through your session.

4. Don't Forget to Iron
Once you decide what to wear make sure it is freshly ironed or steamed and wrinkle free.  People often shop for a new shirt for headshots and if they were folded when they were purchased they come with creases. Make sure you iron and hang your shirt that you will wear for your headshot.  If you are having your photo taken during the work day keep it on a hanger until right before your shoot.

5. Can't Decide? Bring a Second Option.
If you can't decide between two shirts, jackets or ties ask your photographer if you can bring a second option.  If there is no time to change you can create an entirely different look by adding or taking off a jacket which will only take seconds.
